' Trapped in the Past '

In History and Politics inFrench-Language Comics and Graphic Novels - University Press of Mississippi / Jackson - edited by Mark McKinney, Hugo Frey concludes in his chapter 2 'Trapped in the Past',anti-semitism in Hergé's Flight 714 that - to paraphrase Karl Marx - the admires of Tintin have nothing to lose but the chains of their childhood past.

This article is about unraveling facts in order to collect arguments to try to understand the Second World War more profoundly. It will defend the frayed string of my childhood past against Hugo Frey's opinion : 'the admires of Tintin have nothing to lose but the chains of their childhood past' too.
And, to be honest, I want to try to find proof for our understanding of Hitler's mysterious words, his threat/ his 'premonition', the words in his speech of 30 January 1939 : "...not the Bolshivization of the earth, and thus the victory of Jewry, but the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe" and earlier statement of his cosmic antisemitism :

In 1919 Hitler started his political agitation with declaiming against the ‘Diktat van Versailles’. 1924 Landsberg, Hitler’s cosmic antisemitism: ‘Siegt der Jude mit Hilfe seines marxistischen Glaubensbekenntnisses [….] dann wird seine Krone der Totentanz der Menschheit sein, dann wird dieser Planet […] menschenleer durch den Aether ziehen […] So glaube ich heute im Sinne des allmachtigen Schöpfers zu handeln : Indem ich mich des Juden erwehre, kämpfe ich fur das werk des Herrn. Hitler preaches ‘Lebensraum’ -continental imperialism- in eastern direction from 1924onwards too.

After finishing the ‘La Licorne’ episode 23 September, Herge draws in outline ‘ The end of the world will not happen ‘ . In his ‘ Hergé, Lignes de vie’ Herge’s biographer P. Goddin says that the title of this work hints at Jean Giraudoux’ s ‘Tiger at the Gates’. The story will be published - ‘The Calculus Affair’- not before 1956, and is to become the follow-up of ‘Explores on the Moon’ – .
“Jean Giraudoux's Tiger at the Gates (La Guerre de Troie n'aura pas Lieu) portrays a society that looks to poets and intellectuals to glorify, romanticize and sentimentalize the inciting forces of an allegedly inevitable Trojan War through political, literary, mathematic, philosophic and gender constructs. Often, the narcissistic architecture of a history constructed by complex human egos engaging philosophical ideals in intellectual struggles yields just as flimsy a structure as belief in fate or destiny. The play itself is such a construction, thus rendering itself a self-conscious parody of its own attempt to create a structure of meaning—and of the reader's attempt to decipher this meaning—attempts demonstrative of a human need to explain and create order out of words. Nevertheless, the play seeks simultaneously to realize the redemption in such constructions.Giraudoux brilliantly epitomizes this paradox by writing the play on the eve of World War II as an impassioned plea to the French to avert conflict with Germany”.*

16 December 1943 ; start Herge’s cartoon ‘Les 7 Boules de Cristal’ in ‘Le Soir’. Let us have a look at 'cosmic-antisemitism' ; Hitler, Hergé and Max Heindel’ s ‘Rosicrucian Cosmology’ and several aspects in the chronology of war. Maybe it will bring us a hint of a complicated 'Quest-ion' ( how shall we know Christ at his coming?) ?
Will truth remain hidden forever ?
For, even more than 65 years later, specific information concerning secret operations in Europe during the war sometimes still is being protected by government from disclosure - e.g. William Mackenzie's 'Secret History of special operations executive 1940-1945' - even conscientious search into reliable sources might still not yet reveal to us the 'cause and effect' of political ambition on both sides of the belligerents. In Hergé's cartoons -published during the war- we may experience the ugly pandemic anti-semitism of the era, we saw antisemitism in Giraudoux's and in Max Heindel's works as well, and what to say of Hitler's 'premonition' in his speech of 30 January 1939 ?

"Europe cannot find peace until the Jewish question has been solved. …One thing I should like to say on this day [the sixth anniversary of his being appointed Chancellor of the Reich] which may be memorable for others as well as for us Germans. In the course of my life I have very often been a prophet and have usually been ridiculed for it. … Today I will once more be a prophet: if the international Jewish financiers in and outside Europe should succeed in plunging the nations once more into a world war, then the result will not be the Bolshivization of the earth, and thus the victory of Jewry, but the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe."

On 20th July 1933 nuntio Pacelli and Franz von Papen signed the 'Reichskonkordat'


As the Second Vatican Council noted, "insofar as men are sinful, the threat of war hangs over them, and hang over them it will until the return of Christ" (Gaudium et Spes 78). The danger of war will never be completely removed prior to the Second Coming.

Christ's followers must be willing to meet this challenge. They must be willing to wage war when it is just and they must be willing to wage it in a just manner.

Simultaneously, they must work to establish a just and peaceful order among the nations. In so doing they seek to fulfill the words of the prophet, according to which the nations "shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more" (Is. 2:4).



In het boek "Dossier Nordpol" -het Englandspiel onder de loupe- van Jo Wolters, schrijft de auteur in zijn 'woord vooraf' dat hij , toen hij inzage kreeg in vrijgegeven documenten over het werk van de Special Operations Executive, de Britse sabotageorganisatie uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog, die ook in Nederland geopereerd had, dat het eerste document dat hij onder ogen kreeg een fotokopie bevatte van een krantenknipsel van 19 februari 1948 met de titel "The Venlo Kidnapping!". "Wat ik ook in dit dossier verwacht had, zeker geen verwijzing naar die volstrekt mislukte poging uit 1939 van de Britse Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) om op Nederlands grondgebied zaken te doen met het duitse Militaire verzet tegen Hitler."

Nur die militarischen Befehlshaber, die uber grosse Truppenverbande verfugten, waren noch in der Lage, Hitler zu sturzen; das Deutsche Reich konne nur neu gestaltet werden, wenn man den Diktator gewaltsam beseitigte und die hohen Parteifunct. in ihrer Gesamtheit verhaftete. 2000 June 15 : Helmut Knochen ; ‘ Mais je vais vous relater un événement dont je n’ai jamais parlé. A la fin de son séjour, Heydrich me prend à part et me fait une confidence qui m’a stupéfié et que je peux aujourd’hui révéler ’ :" Knochen, la guerre ne peut plus être gagnée, il faudra trouver une paix de compromis et je crains qu’Hitler ne puisse l’admettre. Il faut y réfléchir ". ‘ Manifestement, il voulait revenir à Paris quelques semaines plus tard et prendre des initiatives. Concernant le régime, il semblait envisager un complot. Lui seul avait les capacités et le pouvoir pour agir, alors que le complot du 20 juillet 1944 s’est révélé un travail d’amateurs voué à l’échec. Pour moi, Heydrich était le dignitaire du parti le plus intelligent et, en dehors de lui, il n’y avait personne pouvant comprendre la situation réelle. Il avait compris que l’entrée en guerre des USA impliquait la mise en route d’une formidable industrie de chars et d’avions. L’Allemagne ne pourrait pas suivre ‘.

After Hergé finishes the post-war 'Sept Boules' episode 'Temple du Soleil' he immediately draws the first - Italian size - page of the 'Tintin dans la Lune' cartoon-series.

Hergé's Tintin cartoon in Le Soir 1 September 1944. Hergé uses the 'gag' once more in 'Coke en Stock', a Tintin cartoon 1956. Also in this newspaper Nazi-propaganda-leader Goebbels' warníng that a new secret weapon - V2 - will be launched soon. Finally copy of a document that says the rocket was launched against the enemy for the first time on 5th September 1944.

Bergen-Belsen was liberated exactly three years after German ‘Heeres Waffenambt’ officially proposed the development of a ‘Fernrakete’, the A4 rocket.*
It was not before June 11th 1943 that Hitler earmarked the project ‘highest priority’. The Germans planned the rocket – the V2 – to be operational from September 15 ** - new moon - 1944 onwards , but the weapon was launched succesfully against Paris, already on September 8th * - waning moon- .
The V2-project had been taken away from the Wehrmacht General Dornberger to be assigned by Himmler to SS-General Engineer Heinz Kammler in August 1944. Under his leadership the first operational V2’s were launched . Kammler also known to be responsible for the construction of the underground V2-manufacturing factories and the Auschwitz gas-chambers.
Bergen-Belsen – the camp merely for the ‘exchange Jews ‘ - was earmarked in March 1944 as a reception camp for sick and exhausted prisoners of other camps, who were incapable of working any longer. The first transport of invalids, which arrived in Belsen at the end of March 1944, came from the camp were under catastrophic working and living conditions thousands and finally tens of thousands of concentration camp prisoners were employed there in the construction of underground factory installations for the production of V-weapons, and, after their completion, in the manufacture of the weapons themselves.***

'De meeste moderne wijsbegeerten erkennen involutie en evolutie. Wetenschap, omdat zij slechts met de Vormzijde der openbaring rekening houdt, alleen evolutie. De Involutie behoort tot de Levenszijde. De Kracht in het evoluerend wezen die maakt dat de evolutie van elk individu verschilt van die van elk ander, en vrijheid laat aan het scheppende vermogen dat het ontwikkelende wezen moet opbouwen, openbaart zich als epigenesis. In de Rozekruisers Cosmologie vindt men alle drie verenigd, als onmisbaar voor een volledig begrip van de vroegere, huidige en toekomstige ontwikkeling van het Stelsel waartoe wij behoren. De Kosmische Wortel-zelfstandigheid is uitdrukking v.e. pool van de Universele Geest, de Schepper, de andere pool.'


Hoofdstuk VII. ‘De Weg der Evolutie’

Een woord van waarschuwing in verband met diagrammen, welke ter verduidelijking gegeven worden, is hier misschien op zijn plaats. De bestudeerder moet goed bedenken, dat geen enkel ding, dat tot een andereafmeting teruggebracht wordt, ooit nauwkeurig zijn kan. De afbeelding van een huis zou ons zo goed als niets zeggen, als wij nooit een huis gezien hadden. In dat geval zouden wij in de afbeelding niets anders zien dan lijnen en plekken. Het zou geen zin voor ons hebben. Diagrammen ter verduidelijking van bovenstoffelijke dingen geven nog veel minder getrouwe voorstellingen van de werkelijkheid, om de eenvoudige reden dat het huis van drie afmetingen slechts tot twee afmetingen wordt teruggebracht op de afbeelding, terwijl in het geval van Tijdperken, Werelden en Bollen, de feiten in werkelijkheid van vier tot zeven afmetingen hebben, zodat de diagrammen in twee afmetingen, waarin men ze tracht weer te geven, nog zoveel verder van de mogelijkheid van getrouwe weergave afstaan. Wij moeten voortdurend in gedachte houden, dat deze Werelden elkaar doordringen; dat de Bollen elkaar doordringen, en dat de wijze, waarop ze op het diagram afgebeeld worden, overeenkomt met het naast elkaar plaatsen van al de radertjes in een horloge, dat men uit elkaar genomen heeft om te doen zien, hoe het loopt. Willen deze diagrammen voor de bestudeerder enig nut hebben, dan moeten zij geestelijk begrepen worden; anders zullen zij verwarrend werken, in plaats van helpen. […]

Hoofdstuk VIII ‘Het Werk Der Evolutie’ - De Draad van Ariadne-

Nu wij kennis gemaakt hebben met de Werelden, de Bollen, en de Rondten, waarover de weg der ontwikkeling in de zeven Tijdperken loopt, kunnen wij het werk, dat in elk Tijdperk verricht wordt, zowel als de daarvoor gebruikte methoden, nader gaan beschouwen.
De ‘Draad van Ariadne’, die ons door het doolhof van Bollen, Werelden, Rondten en Tijdperken voeren moet, zal gevonden worden, wanneer men bedenkt en goed in gedachte houdt, dat de maagdelijke geesten, die de ontwikkelende levensgolf samenstellen, geheel onbewust werden, toen zij hun ontwikkelingstocht door de vijf Werelden van dichtere substantie dan die van de Wereld der Geestelijke Maagden begonnen. Daar het doel van de evolutie is om hen tot vol bewustzijn te brengen, in staat de stof van al de Werelden te beheersen, zijn ook de omstandigheden, belichaamd in Bollen, Werelden, Rondten en Tijdperken, overeenkomstig dit doel geregeld.
Gedurende het Saturnus, het zonne en het Maan Tijdperk en de afgelopen helf van ons tegenwoordige Aarde Tijdperk hebben de maagdelijke geesten onbewust hun verschillende voertuigen onder toezicht van de verheven Wezens, die hun ontwikkeling leidden, opgebouwd, en zijn langzamerhand wakker geschud, tot zij nu de toestand van waakbewustzijn bereikt hebben. Dit verloop noemt men ‘Involutie’.
Van nu af aan tot het einde van het Vulcanus Tijdperk zullen de maagdelijke geesten, nu onze huidige mensheid, door hun eigen streven en geniale vermogens in de vijf Werelden hun voertuigen volmaken en hun bewustzijn uitbreiden. Dit verloop noemt men ‘Evolutie’. Het bovenstaande is de sleutel tot het begrijpen van hetgeen volgt.
Een grondig begrip van het schema van planetarische ontwikkeling, zoals dit in de voorgaande bladzijden geschetst is, is van onschatbare waarde voor de bestudeerder. Hoewel sommige aanhangers van de wetten van Oorzaak en Gevolg en van Wedergeboorte schijnen te denken, dat het bezit van dergelijke kennis heel onbelangrijk en van weinig nut is, is zij niettemin voor de ernstige bestudeerder van deze twee wetten, van zeer groot belang. Zij oefent het denkvermogen in abstract denken en verheft het boven de alledaagse dingen van het concrete bestaan, terwijl zij de verbeelding helpt om boven de verwarrende verstrikkingen van het eigenbelang uit te stijgen. Zoals wij bij de bestudering van de Begeerte Wereld geconstateerd hebben, is Belangstelling de voornaamste drijfveer tot handeling, maar op onze trap van ontwikkeling, wordt Belangstelling gewoonlijk door Zelfzucht in het leven geroepen. Zelfzucht soms van zeer subtiel karakter, maar zij drijft tot allerlei soort van handelingen aan. Elke handeling, door Belangstelling gevoed, schept bepaalde gevolgen, die op ons inwerken, en bij gevolg zijn wij gebonden door handelingen, welke met de concrete Werelden verband houden. Indien onze denkvermogens zich echter met onderwerpen, als wiskunde of de studie der planetarische ontwikkelingsstadia bezighouden, zijn wij in de sfeer van zuiver Abstrcte Gedachte, niet langer onder invloed van Gevoel, en wordt het denkvermogen opwaarts gericht naar de geestelijke gebieden en naar bevrijding. Wanneer wij derdemachtswortel trekken, of getallen vermenigvuldigen of over Tijdperken, Rondten, enz. denken, dan blijft Gevoel buiten spel. […] in de wiskunde heerst Waarheid en wordt Gevoel op zijde gezet. Daarom vindt de gewone mens, die in zijn gevoelens leeft, wiskunde droog en oninteressant. Pythagoras leerde zijn leerlingen om in de Wereld van Eeuwigen Geest te leven, en zij die van hem onderricht verlangden, moesten eerst de wiskunde bestuderen. Een denkvermogen dat wiskunde bevatten kan, staat boven het gewone peil en is in staat in de Wereld van de Geest op te stijgen, omdat het niet aan de Wereld van Gevoel en Begeerte gekluisterd is. Hoe meer wij ons aanwennen om in termen, ontleend aan de Geestelijke Werelden te denken, des te beter zullen wij in staat zijn om boven de begoochelingen uit te stijgen, welke ons in dit concrete bestaan omringen, war de tweelinggevoelens, Belangstelling en Onverschilligheid de Waarheid verduisteren en ons verblinden, evenals de straalbreking van het licht door de atmosfeer van de Aarde ons onzuivere denkbeelden geeft omtrent de stand van het hemellichaam, dat de stralen uitzendt. Daarom raden wij de bestudeerder, die het vurig verlangen heeft de Waarheid te kennen, de gebieden van de Geest te betreden en te onderzoeken, zich zo snel mogelijk van de boeien van het vlees te bevrijden, als in verband met zijn standpunt van groei veiligheidshalve mogelijk is, ernstig aan het volgende zo grondig mogelijk te bestuderen, te verwerken en verstandelijke beelden van deze Werelden, Bollen en Tijdperken op te bouwen. Indien hij dien weg wenst in te slaan, zijn de studie van wiskunde en Hinton’s werk The Fourth Dimension prachtige oefeningen voor abstract denken.

Maar , we vinden wel degelijk ook een vorm van 'anti-semitisme' terug in deze cosmologie van Max Heindel:

De Christelijke leer van het Nieuwe Testament behoort in het bijzonder bij de baanbrekende Rassen der Westersche Wereld. Zij heeft vooral wortel geschoten onder de bevolking der Verenigde Staten, want daar het nieuwe Ras van het Zesde Tijdvak de eenmaking van alle Rassen ten doel zal hebben, zijn de Verenigde Staten bezig de ‘smeltkroes’ te vormen, waarin al de volkeren der aarde dooreengemengd worden, en uit deze dooreenmenging zal tenslotte het volgende ‘uitverkoren volk’, de nucleus, verrijzen.De geesten uit alle oorden der wereld, die er bewust of onbewust naar gestreefd hebben om de leerlingen van den Christus na te volgen, zullen hier geïncarneerd worden, teneinde hen in de voor die ontwikkeling geschikte omstandigheden te plaatsen.
Daarom verschilt de in Amerika geboren Jood van den Jood uit andere landen. Het feit alleen, dat hij in de westerse wereld geïncarneerd is, wijst erop dat hij bezig is zich vrij te maken van de Ras-geest, en bijgevolg is hij den vastgeroesten, orthodoxe Jood uit de Oude Wereld verre vooruit ; zoals zijn ouders dit trouwens ook reeds waren, anders zouden zij nooit het plan hebben opgevat de oude banden te verbreken en naar Amerika over te steken. Daarom is de Amerikaanse Jood de pionier, die den weg zal voorbereiden, welken zijn landgenoten later zullen betreden.
Zoo zien wij dus dat de Bijbel de leering bevat, die de Westerse volken in het bijzonder nodig hebben: dat zij een les kunnen leren uit het vreeselijk voorbeeld van het Joodse Ras, zooals dit in het Oude Testament beschreven wordt, terwijl zij uit het Nieuwe de leeringen van den Christus kunnen leeren leven, vrijwillig hun lichamen offerend als een levend offer op het altaar van Broederschap en Liefde.

De twee geboden

Toen men de Meester vroeg wat het grootste gebod was, antwoordde Hij : "U zult de Heer uw God liefhebben met heel uw hart en met al uw kracht. Een groter gebod bestaat er niet". Ik geloof dit, omdat het om het belangrijkste en eerste wezen gaat, God onze Vader, door wie alles gemaakt is, alles blijft, en tot wie we allen zullen terugkeren, die gered zijn. Hij is het die ons als eerste heeft liefgehad, die ons geboren liet worden; het zou heiligschennis zijn om te denken dat er een nog ouder en wijzer wezen bestaat. Onze dankbaarheid schiet tekort tegenover zijn immense weldaden, maar wij kunnen er niet op een andere wijze van getuigen, Hij is volmaakt en heeft niets nodig. Laten we onze Vader met al onze krachten en al onze ijver liefhebben en laten we de onsterflijkheid verwerven. Hoe meer men van God houdt, hoe meer onze natuur zich vermengt en verenigt met de Zijne.

Het tweede grote gebod zegt Jezus, doet in niets onder voor de eerste: "U zult uw naaste liefhebben zoals uzelf"... Toen de Schriftgeleerde aan Jezus vroeg: "Wie is mijn naaste?" (Lc 10,29), antwoordde Hij niet met de joodse definitie over de naaste – de opvoeders, de medeburgers, de bekeerlingen, de mens die dezelfde wet naleeft; maar Hij vertelt het verhaal van een reiziger die van Jeruzalem naar Jericho ging, gewond werd door rovers..., deze man werd verzorgd door een Samaritaan, die "zich zijn naaste toonde" (v.36).

En wie is nog meer mijn naaste dan mijn Redder? Wie had medelijden met ons toen de krachten van de duisternis ons met slagen gewond hadden achtergelaten? ... Alleen Jezus wist onze wonden te genezen en de kwade neigingen die in ons hart wortelen uit te roeien... Daarom moeten we evenveel van Hem houden als God. En Jezus Christus liefhebben is zijn wil vervullen en de geboden onderhouden.

Kloek werk van werkelijk nationaal belang, was in de catastrofale dagen verricht ten aanzien van de Nederlandse koopvaardij. Het zou van onberekenbaar belang blijken voor de toekomstige positie, dat tijdig het overgrote deel van het goud der Nederlandse Bank in veiligheid was gebracht, en dat het overgrote deel der koopvaardijvloot en der Nederlandse zeetrijdkrachten buiten bereik der Duitsers bleef. Hulde voor deze paraatheid en energie! De Nederlandse Regering had reeds van tevoren een evacuatie-plan voor de koopvaardijvloot uitgewerkt, en dankzij de onmiddellijk genomen maatregelen konden 480 schepen, met tezamen 2.5 miljoen b.r.t. en 12000 man personeel worden gered en ter beschikking van de geallieerde oorlogvoering worden gesteld. Een aantal koopvaardijschepen ontsnapte op het laatste ogenblik, onder soms zeer gevaarlijke omstandigheden, aan den greep van den vijand. De stemming op de koopvaardij was voortreffelijk.. Reeds voor de overkomst der Regering had de Nederlandse Gezant zich in verbinding gesteld met de reders die zich toevallig te Londen bevonden, en een commissie ingesteld om hem van advies te dienen: hij was namelijk bij het uitbreken der vijandelijkheden gemachtigd namens de Regering op te treden bij de uitvoering der wetten betreffende de zeescheepvaart. Zo kwam de ‘Nederlandse Scheepvaart- en Handelscommissie’(Netherlands Shipping and Trading Committee) tot stand. Zij werd feitelijk aanstonds, onder het Departement van Handel, Nijverheid en Scheepvaart, een vertegenwoordigende en uitvoerende instantie op scheepvaartgebied, met weldra een hoofdvertakking in New York – een lichaam van groot gezag en invloed. Terecht. Zij was een ondernemersorganisatie met alle karakterisieke deugden – en ook wel de eenzijdigheden van het groot-ondernemers-milieu. De functionarissen verloren de belangen van de hun toevertrouwde rederijen zeker niet uit het oog. The January 5, 1943, declaration did not directly address the German export of gold. The British Ministry of Economic Warfare became increasingly concerned in the Spring of 1943 that the Germans were resorting to the sale of gold to meet their commercial debts to neutral nations providing vital supplies for the Nazi war effort. In view of the German needs and the size of the pre-war gold reserve, such gold sales were, the MEW thought, certain to be of monetary gold looted in Western Europe. The Foreign Office proposed a warning to the neutrals that if they accepted gold from Germany they would be opening themselves to claims under the terms of the January 1943 Declaration. The British Treasury considered such a warning useless inasmuch as looted gold could be melted down and made unrecognizable. In June 1943 the State Department was unwilling to join in issuing such a warning, although the Treasury Department seemed inclined to take such an action.

In November 1943 Treasury asked State to agree to the issuance of a statement on looted gold acquired by the neutral nations in dealings with Germany. The Treasury argued that the United States should not recognize the transfers of Axis gold and should not purchase gold from a nation dealing with the Axis unless it could be determined that gold had not come from the Axis, directly or indirectly. The British Foreign Office found this American proposal for a declaration far too sweeping when the State Department presented it late in 1943. Although the British Treasury was concerned that the action proposed would cause Britain and the United States "many embarrassments" after the war, both Treasury and the Bank of England swung around to willingness to support a gold declaration in the interest of Anglo-American relations.

The Declaration on Gold Purchases of February 22, 1944, made in the United States by Treasury Secretary Morgenthau, stated that the United States would not recognize the transference of title to looted gold which the Axis at any time held or had disposed of in world markets. It further declared that the United States would not buy any gold located outside the territorial limits of the United States from any country which had not broken relations with the Axis, or from any country which subsequently acquired gold from any country which had not broken relations with the Axis, unless and until the United States was fully satisfied that such gold was not acquired directly or indirectly from the Axis powers, or was not gold which any such country had been or was able to release as a result of the acquisition of gold directly or indirectly from the Axis powers. Britain and the Soviet Union made similar declarations on the same day.

Major-General J.F.C. (John Frederick Charles) Fuller (1878-1966) is often associated with Liddell Hart, but the men were in many ways quite different. Fuller belonged to an older generation; his practical military experience was much greater; his interests were until a rather late date more narrowly tactical and technological; and his view of Clausewitz was much less static, undergoing considerable evolution.

The title page of his memoirs quotes Herakleitos: "Asses would rather have refuse than gold." Fuller made it quite clear that this line was directed at the British military leadership. Someone skeptical of Fuller's approach might observe that the asses in this case were simply being sensible, preferring the digestible to the merely ornamental.

Both men were also profoundly shaken by the experience of the First World War; both made their reputations as advocates of mechanization; and both suffered an eclipse in reputation during the Second World War (Fuller for his prewar connections with British fascism and for his alleged advocacy of an all-armored, tank-heavy force, universally rejected by 1943). Once out of uniform, each made his living through journalism, a profession that greatly affected the style, if not necessarily the content, of their writings. Both ended their days as rehabilitated military prophets, with considerable honor in their own countries as well as abroad.

This video shows our attic and loft. I show you the contents of a box containing about a hundred letters, answers from former inmates to the enquiry-letter written by my grandfather asking them if they probably knew about his son - my uncle - while they were in imprisonment in Germany. The box also contains a few photo's that were pinned on the wall of my uncle's room when my grandparents where still living in Tilburg. The box was probably brought in my parental home when my grandparents moved - in 1962- to an elderly home nearby our city. Showing the - 1946- newspaper telling the story of the two resistance comrades Loek Lansdorp en René Norenburg who did not return home in Tilburg after the war. Here you can read the Newspaper : Tilburgse Courant My uncle's comrade Loek Lansdorp is allowed to write farewell letter to his family and - resistance- friends before he is shot on 5th September.
Photo of the Tilburg student fencing-team 1942 / 1943. Also photo of - probably - corporation of students 'Sint Olof' 1942 / 1943. Fencing masks in the loft belonged to my father and to my uncle. My uncle replaced my father in the board of the fencing team after my father was taken prisoner of war, May 1942. My father had been an officer during the German May 1940 attack on the west. After capitulation of the Dutch armed forces, my father - practically all Dutch officers- signed a 'declaration of honour' : meaning that they where free to go on condition that they promised not to attack on the occupier. In september he started to study at Tilburg Hogeschool (University)

Synchronicity :
Sigismund Payne Best signed the copy of his book 13 years after the 1939 'Venlo Incident ' .
The incident marks the end of traditional Dutch ' neutrality ' in 20th century European conflicts and compromised the Dutch for facilitating secret negotiations, taking part against Nazi-Germany .

Notice that the date of the 'Schnellbrief' corresponds - coincidentally(?)- with the Dutch official Red Cross letter informing my grandparents the whereabouts of their younger son This 'coincidental date' might have been a reason why the Captain* came to Maastricht and probably visited my father in november 1952?

Showing once more my father's cigarette-case that he bought and that was made by an Russian or Polish prisoner during imprisonment.
After my father was taken prisoner - May 1942-, his younger brother - my uncle - then also a member of the students corporation St. Olof, is about to write him a letter. But this rough copy was never send and kept in a small printed book of Sint Olof's corporation of students. Finally pictures, taken February 1949, of my uncle's room in Tilburg.

- My uncle grew up and lived with his family in Tilburg. He went into hide when he was a student in Tilburg, during the war. For the first time, from 9-2-1943 / 29-3-1943 ,he was hiding in Verviers** in Belgium. Later in May, students who did not sign the 'Loyaliteitsverklaring' saw themselves obliged to hide from the occupier. The box that I open in this video - belonged to my grandmother - and contains a series of pictures that were taken while my uncle was hiding in Verviers. The rough copy of a letter that I show was written by him in the autumn of 1943, while he was hiding in Haaren and when already a member of a resistance group 'Raad van Verzet' who were expecting the Allied invasion soon - as was told them by Dutch Radio in London 'Radio Oranje'- . One of the two first pictures that are shown represent the house where my uncle is hiding with a friend 'Bim', the next picture
shows the family where he is hiding, together with their cow and a resistance comrade. Here you can see the picture enlarged , and a few of the letters my uncle wrote to my father in Stanislaw while he was hiding in Haaren :'Nec Plus Ultra'
Envelope that is not opened contains my uncle's (pre-war) passport. The envelope that I open contains a small note written by my uncle to inform his family (parents) that he has been caught - 22 february 1944 - and at the moment of his writing - is being taken to Scheveningen Prison : 'Oranje Hotel', the Hague.

My parental home is situated near the Belgian / Dutch border. Early in the twenties of past century there was a quarrel between the two countries concerning the use and the conditions of the waterways to the Belgian and dutch harbours of Antwerp and Rotterdam. According to the Versailles Treaty the Dutch were obliged to offer the Belgians a new and better waterway what would result in a worse economic-strategic position for the Dutch harbour. Most famous Dutch National Socialist leader Anton Mussert,who was at that time working for 'Rijkswaterstaat', managed -with the help of a former banking director of 'De Nederlandsche Bank'- to politically block this obligation of the Treaty. Belgians decided to dig the Albert Canal, cutting in two the Sint Pietersberg on the eastbank of the river Meuse south of the city of Maastricht. During the 2nd World War Rembrandt's 'Nachtwacht' was hidden in a cave, called 'De Kluis' on this side of the river Meuse in the mountain of Saint Peter's.

Op deze foto ,in onze achtertuin gemaakt bij gelegenheid van mijn 1e Heilige Communie'-feest 24 mei 1964 ,laat ik vol trots de cadeau's zien die ik gekregen heb.
Het Kuifje stripverhaal 'De Geheimzinnige Ster' ,van Hergé werd van oktober 1941 tot mei 1942 dagelijks in de Belgische krant 'Le Soir 'gepubliceerd. Kuifje bemachtigt als lid van een Europese expeditie in de noordpoolcirkel een stuk meteoorsteen wanneer hij per parachute op de meteoriet land voordat zijn concurrenten ter plaatse aan land gaan.

De principes vd krijgskunst zijn erg eenvoudig en volkomen te begrijpen met het gezonde verstand. Alhoewel bij tactiek wat meer speciale kennis komt kijken dan bij strategie is ook die kennis zo beperkt dat zij nauwelijks met een andere wetenschap kan worden vergeleken. Geleerdheid en diepzinnigheid zijn er dus niet voor nodig, noch zelfs veel begrip, afgezien ve talent voor krijgslisten. Men heeft lang het tegendeel van dit alles volgehouden maar dit was uit een misplaatst gevoel van eerbied voor deze zaak en had ook te maken met de ijdelheid van de auteurs die erover hebben geschreven. Een onpartijdige beschouwing kan ons slechts dit leren. De werkelijkheid is altijd anders, aldus brengt von Clausewitz zijn pupil zeer duidelijk aan het verstand en daarom raadt hij hem aan liever de krijgsgeschiedenis te bestuderen dan zich al te veel met theorieen af te geven. Niet de krijgsgeschiedenis in handboekvorm - daartegen waarschuwt von Clausewitz hem- maar zo feitelijk mogelijke verslagen van significante krijgsgebeurtenissen, ook wanneer die , historisch gezien, niet eens zo belangrijk waren. Daaruit valt voor een jongeman, die de oorlog niet niet zelf heeft beleefd, het allermeeste te leren omdat het tenslotte op morele kwaliteiten aankomt. The outline plan specified a primary phase in which the SHAEF(S) forces, after the collapse or surrender would consummate OVERLORD by a rapid advance deep into Germany. The plan also contained the hint of a race for Berlin; but the ECLIPSE planning, as it continued into the winter, never did get down to the staging of an operation. In late January, an airborne strike to seize Berlin was nominally on the agenda for ECLIPE; but although such a strike would have taken weeks, to mount, nothing had been done to prepare it. SHAEF obviously expected to execute only an administrative plan for establishing the occupation in Germany.

Now I'll show you several pages that I copied from Brereton's diary. But his writing will only be usefull to you when you can compare his writing to as much as possible other reports about key-operations that took place prior to Market-Garden. I think U.S. general Brereton , commander of the parachute-army-corps knew exactly when and where to use this weapon of surprise, but we must not forget that the Germans were the first and most experienced in using this weapon. Many books were and still are published about the ' Battle of Arnhem '. It seems that my father, a Dutch WW2 army-officer, collected quite a few of those, written in the '40's and '50's of the 20th century. D-Day+1 Dutch prisoners that were kept in the Hague prison ' Oranjehotel' were evacuated to the concentration-camp Vught near the south-east border with Germany. Many political prisoners or ' resistance-fighters' were sent to Vught from other prisons aswell in the next two months and finally near the end of August Germans started to shoot prisoners related to certain resistance-groups. 6/7 september the rest of the prisoners were evacuated into Germany. After 9th and 10th SS-division escaped at Mons on 3th september , and if Operation ' Linnet II ' had been executed like it'd been proposed by Gen. Brereton the two SS-divisions and German forces on the move to the east would have been forced into battle by surprise while still in disorder. When I read Montgomery's memoirs on this particular episode (3-17 september) I think Brereton is trying to say at a certain moment when he writes in his diary, that the use of the airborne army weapon is not yet correctly understood by the superior generals/field-marchal. Montgomery tells us that Market-Garden suits best to try to cut of German forces in the west of Holland. I think that he'd been tempted to the gambling game of Market-Garden by the superb surprise weapon : a weapon of destruction the V2 .

Op zolder in ons ouderlijk huis lagen een paar keeper-handschoenen en een stel schermmaskers op 'n boekenkast. Er tegenover 'n wand met dubbele rijen dik gestapeld de(oorlogs)boeken van mijn vader.
Ik vond er de 'Tilburgse Courant' in een doos met brieven van gerepatrieerde ex-politieke gevangenen. De meeste gerepatrieerden hadden m'n oom niet gekend of gezien tijdens hun gevangenschap in Duitsland, zo schrijven zij aan m'n grootvader.
In de boekenkast staat 'Vriend&vijand', een boek over de 'Zwarte Plak', de boerderij waar 'Carlo' en m'n oom zaten ondergedoken en waar hun verzetsgroep verblijf hield tot het vroege voorjaar van 1944. In een noot van het boek over de 'De Zwarte Plak ' vind ik de Afscheidsbrief van Loek Lansdorp afgedrukt, geschreven op 4 september : hij vermaakt zijn schermuitrusting aan Gé en mijn oom René van de schermclub en hij besluit zijn testament met : 'Schudt alles wakker wat nog steeds slaapt.. Nu vrienden, nog een laatste vaarwel en alles voor God en vaderland !'

As the Second Vatican Council noted, "insofar as men are sinful, the threat of war hangs over them, and hang over them it will until the return of Christ" (Gaudium et Spes 78). The danger of war will never be completely removed prior to the Second Coming.

Christ's followers must be willing to meet this challenge. They must be willing to wage war when it is just and they must be willing to wage it in a just manner.

Simultaneously, they must work to establish a just and peaceful order among the nations. In so doing they seek to fulfill the words of the prophet, according to which the nations "shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more" (Is. 2:4).

In het boek "Dossier Nordpol" .het Englandspiel oder de loupe van Jo Wolters, schrijft de auteur in zijn 'woord vooraf' dat hij , toen hij inzage kreeg in vrijgegeven documenten over het werk van de Special Operations Executive, de Britse sabotageorganisatie uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog, die ook in Nederland geopereerd had, dat het eerste document dat hij onder ogen kreeg een fotokopie bevatte van een krantenknipsel van 19 februari 1948 met de titel "The Venlo Kidnapping!". "Wat ik ook in dit dossier verwacht had, zeker geen verwijzing naar die volstrekt mislukte poging uit 1939 van de Britse Secret Intelligence Service (SIS) om op Nederlands grondgebied zaken te doen met het duitse Militaire verzet tegen Hitler."
